Guwahati to Shillong by road: what to expect
About 100 km and three hours through the Khasi hills, with Umiam Lake on the way. Where to stop, and when to leave.

Most trips into Meghalaya start at Guwahati airport or railway station. The road to Shillong is about 100 km and usually takes around three hours, depending on traffic leaving Guwahati.
The drive
The first stretch crosses the busy edge of Guwahati. Once you climb past the Assam–Meghalaya border the road winds up through pine forests and the air cools noticeably.
Stops worth making
- Umiam Lake (Barapani): a wide blue reservoir about 15 km before Shillong. Stop for photos and tea.
- Roadside dhabas near Nongpoh: a good break halfway.
When to leave
Leave Guwahati by late morning to reach Shillong in daylight. In the monsoon, add an hour for slow traffic on the hill sections.
Which car?
A sedan is fine for two or three people with normal luggage. For families or if you are continuing to Cherrapunji and Dawki, an SUV is more comfortable on the hills.
