The road to Tawang crosses Sela Pass at roughly 13,700 ft. Even in summer it can be cold and windy at the top, and in winter it is often under snow.
Clothing
- Thermal inner layers and a fleece.
- A windproof, warm jacket.
- Woollen cap, gloves and warm socks.
- Shoes with good grip for icy patches.
Health and comfort
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: the sun is strong at altitude.
- Lip balm and moisturiser for the dry air.
- Your regular medicines, plus something for motion sickness on the winding roads.
- A refillable water bottle. Drink often and go slow on the first day.
Documents
Carry your Inner Line Permit printout and the photo ID you applied with. Phone signal is patchy on the pass, so keep digital copies offline too.
If anyone feels a strong headache or breathlessness at the pass, tell your driver. Descending is the best fix.
